Sub-genre Codes & Conventions

Cover:
  • Masthead in top left corner in bold font
  • Masthead in larger font than other headings
  • Cover lines opposite pugs and linking to contents of the magazine
  • Pugs promote magazine, somewhat exaggerative
  • One image, usually of the band in a medium close-up
  • Casual mise-en-scene
  • Main cover line attached to image
  • Plain, bright backgrounds
  • Constant use of black and red fonts
  • Date, issue number, and price shown by barcode in bottom right corner
  • Make sure follows house style colours


Contents Page:

  • Title of "Contents" at the top of the page in similar font to masthead
  • Potentially an image in the centre of the page
  • Image different to main image on cover
  • Casual mise-en-scene
  • List content of magazine with page number and possible description of the page
  • Have magazines logo somewhere on the page, most likely in top corner
  • Make sure follows house style colours


Double Page Spread:

  • Main image representing what the article is talking about, usually a band or parts of it
  • Casual mise-en-scene
  • Quote or name of band in large font as introduction
  • Pull quote from artist to draw attention to something said
  • Byline at end of article
  • Magazine logo in small in corner or page
  • Make sure follows house style colours
